if so what are the side effects? Is it necessary to bleed so that you get rid of excess things inside you?

No it is not necessary to bleed very long at all. Just like periods are not something that a woman must go through to remain healthy. I bled for two months after my second daughter and I began taking estrogen and progesterone supplements because they couldn't get it to stop. There's nothing wrong with it and if you're not having any problems resulting in the bleeding (such as hemorrage or so forth) then taking pills to stop it is perfectly safe. Sometimes it takes a long time for your hormones to get back to normal so a little help is needed. Don't stress, it's normal and it's perfectly safe. Good luck!

I bled severely for 6 wks. and I was on the pill (it was different from all the rest because I was nursing). It didn't stop my bleeding. I don't think anything will unless you maybe went for a DNC but I don't even know if that's an option. I think it's just nature . I could deal with pads so i did use tampons even though they tell you not too. I just made sure that I changed it every hour. I was fine, no infections or anything of that nature.

Postpartum bleeding may be due retained placenta therefore removal of the retained placenta should be done.
Another cause of postpartum bleeding would be lacerations in the genital area & another one would be uterine atony.
It is not just a matter of giving medications! The cause should be investigated.
Follow up with your obstetrician gynecologist if you still have bleeding!
