I have heard different things. When everyone comes to a party or gathering and brings a gift (certain price range) and all presents go collectively into a 'pot' or under the Christmas tree....what is this called? What are the different types? Do you draw numbers and pick randomly?

If you can take the gifts from each other it is called dirty santa or selfish santa. If you just take the gift you pick I don't know the exact name for that.

It's not a secret santa. That is when you have a specific person that you buy a gift for, but they don't know who you are. I have always heard it referred to as a Chinese gift exchange. Everyone brings a gift within a certain price range and you put them under the tree. In some cases I have seen that they put numbers on the presents and then the people draw numbers and get that present. Then going in order from number one, each person opens their gift. Now if the person does not like their gift they can take someone elses gift from them and open that one instead. Then you go down the line and each person can keep the gift they have or steal someone elses gift until you have gone through all of the numbers. Some versions allow each person only one trade. Some versions allow each person two trades, so after you have gone through all of the numbers, you can go through once more and trade again if you want to. In another version you don't put numbers on the presents, but rather starting with number one the person just picks whichever present they want to unwrap. Then the next number can either take the number one person's present or choose to unwrap a different one. Everyone has their own version and you can kind of make up your own rules. What is really fun is when some people bring joke gifts. Have fun! For other ideas you might try:

If the gifts are absolutely hideous, it is called a "white elephant" exchange.
If you are drawing numbers and the host has a matching set of numbers, it is a fun game where the host draws a number and the person holding the number gets to draw a present from the pile of gifts or takes a gift from someone who has already drawn; this goes around at least twice (more if you like) and everyone ends up with a gift. I have no idea what the game's name is but I have had fun playing it.
