I am breastfeeding but occasionally when she goes through her spurts once or twice a day of emptying both breasts and still being hungry the doctor told me to give her an oz or 2 of formula. The iron in the formula is making her constipated, my mom said she used to have to get formula without iron for me when I was little. Do they make any formulas that have less or no iron than the others?

I found the easiest on the baby's system was Nestle Good Start. (the regular one not iron fortified) It used to be Carnation Good Start.
I also tried pumping whenever I could after the baby was fed or sleeping. (to have extra breast milk on hand) Our bodies our supposed to make as much or little as the baby wants but sometimes we need time to catch up. (or alittle help)

Sorry I do not know of one without any iron.

They sure do. It should say on the package whether the formula is high in iron or not. Similac and Enfamil both have two versions. one with high iron and one without. Check wal-mart or babies r us. All of the formulas will have some iron in it, it is the nature of the formula, but there will be products that state high iron and those that don't. The products that dont blatantly state on the front of the package "HIGH IRON" are considered regular. On the package that you have now check to see it it boasts having extra iron in it. If it does just get regular formula and try that. If it does not then look for the low iron formula. Go on the brand websites to research with brands have what you are looking for. Especially if you specifically want LOW iron.

None that I know of because iron is so vital to infants. It might not be the iron, but the formula itself. Many formula fed, or babies that switch from breast to formula have problems passing a BM. Try a different brand of formula if you think you need to. I wouldn't try to find a formula with no iron though because it might affect her worse than you think. Also, try asking the doctor about this question. My doctor always forced with IRON as much as possible, but that could have been our case because I was very anemic when I was pregnant. Maybe your case is different and it wouldn't do the harm I have read it would. Good Luck though!

I had the same problem with my daughter. We switched to Enfalac Regular, which has the lowest amount of iron that I could find. They do not make a formula that doesn't contain iron since iron is very important to little babies. When your daughter is older, say around 3 months or so, you can switch back to the higher iron formula. Her digestive system will be more mature at that age, and she should be able to handle the iron better. Good luck!

It may have just been the change in breast milk to formula that caused the constipation. Once I switched from nursing to formula my sons bowel movements changed completely. He used to go almost every time i nursed, because breast milk is a natural laxative. So that is probably what is causing it not the iron. From what I understand babies need lots of iron.

I've never seen any that didn't contain iron. They need iron. Also there isn't enough iron in the formula to constipate a baby. I'm guessing that your baby is use to breastmilk and when you give her the formula it upsets her tummy.

Contact your doctor and ask which formula he/she would recommend.

Good luck.

It's an old recipie...

Filtered water
Karo syrup
Carnation Evaporated milk
and added vitamins of your choice with or without Iron.

I gave my oldest son this (at the advice of my mom) because he was intolerant of everything on the market... When he was older, I switched him to Good Starts because it is the closest to milk.

He is tall, absolutely beautiful, healthy and has a 160 IQ. He is 14.

I couldn't find the exact recipie for you Im sure that it merits some research as it is from the 1950's?

if i am not mistaken all formula has iron added. i don't think it is the iron that is making her constipated i think it is just the change from breast to bottle.....if your daughter is old enough, have you considered starting a cereal for the time when she is most hungry......
