1.Download CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ and run it once daily before shutting down your computer. It removes all the trash files that are created while surfing through the net. Use its Issues section once every 2 weeks to delete all the unused registry keys. If you have a lot of Auto Start entries, then you can remove them from its Tools>Startup. But keep the important ones like firewall and the real-time protection shields of your anti-virus and anti-spyware.
2.Keep a decent anti-virus, a strong firewall and two anti-spyware in your computer. Always keep the real time protection shield(or resident shield) of the anti-virus and one of the anti-spyware active. Update them and scan your computer once every week with both the anti-spyware and once every 2 weeks with anti-virus. I have given the links to some free and good anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall; get them all:
AVG:
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/set...
AdAware SE:- http://www.download.com/ad-aware-se-pers...
SpyBot Search and Destroy: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/spy...
Comodo Personal Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/d...
Never keep two anti-virus or firewall on a single system. If you are already using a good anti-virus or firewall, then you need not download the corresponding one.
3.Keep a virtual memory booster as an auto-start entry. It frees the clogged RAM. I use RAM Booster, which is very effective. Here is the link to download it:
http://www.download.com/rambooster/3000-...
After downloading it, follow the steps:
*.Cilck on Edit>Options and tick the follow options:
1.Set auto optimisation on
2.Show CPU usage
3.Start minimised
4.Launch automatically at start up
Also, increase the auto optimisation level and 'Mb of RAM to free at auto level' as per your requirement.
4.Keep at least 35% of your C: free. Transfer all the music, image and video files to other drives.
5.Defragment your hard drives(especially C:) once every month. To defrag, go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Defragment.
All these will most certainly speed up your computer. Good Luck!
:-)

You need to set the defragger to once a day at least. The more information that comes and go's the more you have to defreg. The virtual memory can be optimised by a tool called tune up utilites 2006. The best defragger is one that does a boot time defrag like exec dic keeper. Both of these programs will have your pc running like a sweety. Also for defragger to work properly it needs space on the hard drive. Try and have at least 20% free. If you cant find these two programs email me I might be able to help.

How congested is your hard drive? The virtual memory is unused hard drive space used to supplement the RAM of the computer. If you have alot of free space on your computer, it is possible to increase your virtual memory (would need to get back to you on how to do it). Most likely you are running some heavy memory usage applications, so you may want to upgrade the RAM of the computer also. The music files would only be a problem if you are almost full on the harddrive. If that is the case, you may want to either get an upgraded hard drive (bigger) or a second hard drive (can be external) to store all the music.
Finally, did you scan the computer for viruses and adware/spyware? If you have some on your computer they could be stealing memory from the machine.

Music will really bog down your system, if you can transfer it to disk, would free up a lot of resources on your system. Have you virus scanned, this too should be done weekly, if you don't have one, they have a good free one at www.avgfree.com, you look under downloads and the top one for home and pro users, will give you a 30 day trial, and after that it will convert to the free edition.
Also go into your start menu and uncheck everything in there, programs running in the background will eat up resources, to do this, you click "START" then "RUN" then type in ........msconfig...........then click on start menu, uncheck everything, cause what you use, will load back up into there, as you use it, reboot your system after doing this.
Another thing to do, is to clean temp internet files, to do this, go to "TOOLS" on top, click on that , then find "INTERNET OPTIONS" click on that, and delete temp internet files, including offline content, if a box pops up, check mark all of that.
Good Luck hope this helps you.

no.... even if you have alot of used up memory in your hard drive it should not affect the RAM or virtual memory..... I would check to see what programs are in your startup folder. The programs that start up when you first turn on your computer are what affect the memory..... i would change the settings on those programs so they will not start up in the beginning. Also go to your Control Panel and change how much virtual memory you want used up because you can change that as well.
good luck

Right-click on My Computer; go to Properties; Advanced; Performance; Advanced. In here you can change how VM is managed: either you set the parameters or let the system choose (this is default). If you have more than one partition one your hard drive, put the page file on a non-system partition ie not on the C drive

You need to increase free space at your hard disk by simply deleting unecessary files. Anyhow, if you already have enough empty space then chances are that VM file of OS is corrupted in some way.

a rapid way is to delete the cookies. in short this could be a memory of all internet sites you have been on interior the previous. Having cookies helps the pages to load somewhat swifter. in case you eliminate those you ought to launch a load of memory. yet in a different way is to shop all your image's / video clips on an exterior source... i.e a USB memory stick!

maybe it is your music or maybe you have too many programs.
what you should do it get a USB stick for a back up, one with a lot of memory, and just back up everything on the stick so you don't lose anything in the end. you can buy those anywhere: college bookstores, fry's, bestbuy..etc
good luck.
