Mr. Ling bought 5/6 of a pound of cheese. He ate 3/4 of it. How much was left?

The book says the answer is 5/24. I don't see how to get that? Are you supposed to multiply or divide or subtract?

5/6 is equal to 20/24

3/4 of 20 = 15

1/4 of 20 = 5

hence 5/24 is one quarter of 5/6

Ok so he purchase 5/6 of a pound of cheese. If he ate 3/4 of it that means there is 1/4 left of his cheese. You need to multiply 1/4 times 5/6 and you get 5/24ths as your answer.

In math terms he had (5/8) or 0.8333lbs of cheese. He ate 0.75 of it. Multiply those two to see how many pounds of cheese he ate... you get 0.625 (or 15/24). Then subtract 0.625 from 0.8333 (or 15/24 from 5/6 (which is the same as 20/24) and you get a final answer of 5/24

This is a subtraction and multiplication problem.

If he ate 3/4 of the whole thing subtract 1-3/4 to get 1/4 left over.

So now multiply 1/4 times 5/6 to find out how much was left over.

Hope this helps. Good Luck. :)

Mr. Ling purchased 5/6 lb of cheese. He ate 3/4 of it.
Therefore,he at (5/6)X(3/4) or 5/8 lb cheese.
Therefore,Qty. of cheese left=(5/6)-(5/8) or 5/24 lb

I got a different answer...I might have gotten it wrong...but here's what I did...

I subtracted them 10/12 - 9/12 (you have to have the same bottom number) and I got 1/12 as my answer. I think that is right...
