We have well water, we also have a water softener. Every once in a while our water gets very cloudy and brownish for a couple of days. It always clears up but what is causing this and what can we do to prevent it?

Stop drinking the water (if it your main source of drinking water) and have it checked out. It may be that you are getting ground water in your well if you have had a lot of rain recently. If that is the problem, it may not make you sick but if you have any pets who also drink the the water , it will make them really sick.

Could be any number of things, some harmless and some not so harmless. You need to have a professional check it out for you.

Consult plumber, landlord, and husband/wife/children. Don't drink/use water until corrected.
