They certainly can. The real question is will they? There will be bickering but both parties have too much to lose if they stay at each others throats all the time. Hopefully there will be some effort to work together.
I agree with what you say we need to do about illegal entry. It's easy to figure out that we need to stop it. It is not easy to actually do it. We are spending millions for the fence project which will only be successful if we have enough personnel on hand to patrol it. Of course if we had security in that kind of numbers we would not need the fence. The problem of illegal entry goes beyond a quick fix. Politicians that tell us that it Can be done quickly and easily are lying to us. To address this problem we have to consider the root causes of why these people are fleeing their own country and why they are coming here. If you do that you will realize we have to begin with the major corporations, individuals, and small companies and farms that hire them. Until we do that the fence is just an exercise in waste and futility.

Partisanship? Sure. Sincerely held convictions? I cannot do this and won't do this, for any reason. I do not define patriotism as supporting the president and I also do not use that quote that liberals have abused for the past 6 years about dissent. I define patriotism as upholding the principles of the US Constitution and being willing to give my life, if necessary for them. I'm reserving support for Obama until I see what he and this Congress do with our military and what they do with our US C rights. I do not agree that Obama ran an honorable campaign. I believe he cut at the heart of patriotism, by spending 2 years campaigning against a war our nation is fighting.

FINALLY!!! Bravo RLP! A nice fair and balanced question not aimed at suppressing dissenting opinions! I knew you had it in you girl! Now, to answer the question, I think that this last election was a wke up call to all...the dems will have to come up with a platform for the next election, and reps will have to listen to the will of the people. Since both sides are on probation right now, their only choice (if they want to keep their jobs) is to work together, and be representative of the people. And MAYBE immigration reform will be addressed, but I don't think it is going to be easy. i mean, illegals are that way, because it is illegal for them to be here. the legislation is there, it just needs to be enforced. HOW it will be enforced will greatly be a matter of opinion, and we won't see any quick solutions. But yes, we can all agree that illegal is illegal. Now what do we do about it?

If History is any indication of Congress solving problems...
then, NO!
As for Illegal Immigration you can't stop it with legislation. The legislation is mostly there. It is President Bush's Job as the Executive Branch to inforce immigration policy! Go ask him, oh wait he isn't taking calls.
Yeah, I pretty pissed that I pay thousands in taxes and can't get health coverage when hispanic immigrants all over california are getting it for free. WHAT ABOUT THAT!!!
BTW, All 19 9/11 terrorists were legal aliens, or visitors to the US, so maybe we need to work on the legal aliens too!
OMG, But honestly as much as I like Pelosi, her district is full of Mexicans, not that many of them vote (I LIVE IN HER DISTRICT!) so I saw this myself. In fact I live on the same block as the polling center. Nothing but guys in wheelchairs on the 7th!

Look for some accomplishments but remember presidential elections are only 2 years off.
1. Partisanship will still be the order of the day
2. Some stuff might get done on education or ss or minimum wage, but that will only be for Demo show
The President will be more conciliatory because he wants the history books to do him good.

Illegal immigration is easy to stop. Punish those who employ them. We don't need a wall. Spend the money on enforcement of the present laws.
Thanks for the good question.

The bright side of the election was the fact that most of the Democrats who took Republican seats are conservatives. Wow! Conservative Democrats, that's refreshing. Also, most of them are ex-military. I feel hopeful that these new conservative Democrats will help bring congress shoulder-to-shoulder in solving the current international problems.
My fingers are crossed.

solving problems is not what they do. illegal immigration is a diversionary tactic dreamed up by the Public Relations firms that run the elections. it's trivial. if you are obsessing over immigration you are not thinking about why neither party supports affordable healthcare. which is what most people care about. what congressmen do is try to maximize the amount of defense contract money going to their district. it is a self licking ice cream cone.

I don't think that is possible. IMO the Dems will use their power to create a dozen "investigative commissions" and spend the next 2 years harrassing every republican- Bush included- that they can think of. They will also sabotage the war effort both at home and abroad- then blame it all on Bush anyway.
I don't think the Dems are able to cooperate- they are always in "election" mode.
