Not sure there are any common warning signs, because computer viruses are simply programs that other people make. They can do anything from from deleting information off your computer, to secretely tracking your usage of the computer, and lots of other annoying things inbetween.

But, if you suspect here is something wrong, thje following may indicate a problem:

Computer crashes or freezes.
Exceptionally long time turning on.
Hearing the hard drive constantly spinning, even though no application is running.
Having your computer attempt to dial a phone number with out you initiating it.

www.lavasoft.com is a website that has a free version of a "adware/spyware" scanner and remover called Ad-aware. It is pretty good. Sometimes its adware/spyware that is slowing computers down and not viruses. Norton and McAfee both offer antivirus software you can scan with but tehy cost money I think. Not sure if there is a free antivirus software out there.

Most of the time you won't even tell the difference, viruses and trojans work on the background and take very low CPU processing ... the whole purpose is to be unnoticed by the user.
What I do is - go through my processes that are currently running, and make sure they are all legit, Windows processes or the actual program processes that I have installed. If there is one you have no idea what it is - do a search on your computer on it first, look where it is located and which programs are/might be using it. If it still looks suspicious - go online and search Yahoo! for this process, there are a lot of websites that will tell you whether that process is legit or a virus, or w/e else it might be.

Mine were slow-down and surprise pop-ups, but this was some time ago. Viruses may be different these days. My computer got slower and slower to start up (I shut it down every night, unlike most folks...). And I started getting weird popups anytime I started Internet Explorer - I have dialup and don't stay online all the time. The popups were atypical brown background and said something like "Microsoft error, but don't worry about it, your computer is okay, click here to continue..." (just annoying messages). I finally got a scan done, and found 53 viruses. Ever since then, I've kept 3 antivirus and 4 antispyware packages updated and running!

Open your task manager and learn what your processes are. If you are unsure of a process, you can google it and the results are pretty accurate. This would be the first place to look. I tend to use command line and the "tasklist" command to find hidden processes, you are also able to force shutdown of processes that you are unable to shutdown via task manager. Other signs would be slowness, internet now working or look at the amount of packets coming in and out of your computer. You can do this by either looking at your network connection stats or by using Tigershark view the protocols and packets flowing through your pc. Good luck

Your computer will not turn on or logon. Your computer is running very slow. You cannot open certain applications like you have before. Your memory is eaten up. Your hard drive crashes. You can go to Best Buy and go to the computer dept. to have them check and clean it for you. Geek Squad.

Better avoid a virus than wait for its warning sign. Get AVG 7.5 Free from the following link, update it and run a full system scan to check if you have any virus:

Your computer will start to run really slow, if you hold alt control, and hit delete, go to task manager, and click performance, if you see at the top it will say CPU usage, if it is a steady 85 and above, you ahev problems!
