If you are comfortable with computers then a PC is generally cheaper and more versatile due to more hardware and software available for it.
Macs are better designed aesthetically but have limited and overpriced software and hardware. In my opinion Macs are for people who don't understand computers (or don't want to).
These days there's very little to choose in terms of stability and performance, despite what Mac users say.
I'd recommend a branded PC laptop (rather than a cheap unknown brand). The cheaper laptops skimp on important components and a laptop gets more abuse than a desktop.
For what it's worth I use a PC laptop running Linux which is the cheapest and most secure combination. However I wouldn't recommend it unless you're pretty computer (and Linux) literate because you have to do a hell of a lot of the configuration yourself when a Mac or Windows machine does it for you.

I work on both platforms everyday, Windows and Mac. Even though a Mac laptop is priced higher, I would strongly reccomend it over a PC. It just works (and looks) better. Looks better not just on the outside but the software that runs on it is super smooth.
I would suggest you figure the price of Microsoft Office into the cost of the laptop as well since that will give you Word, Excel, Power Point, etc. Other than that the software that comes with the Mac is awesome (far more elgegant than PC) for calender, address book, music, home movies, web surfing. If she's into any type of design the Mac is the clear cut winner. Also, no virus's or Spyware on Macs. Plus you can now run Windows on a mac if you want to.
At the end of the day, its a personal choice. There's plenty of people (dumb people) that will tell yopu I am dead wrong. What's better Ford or Chevy? I've had plenty of Macs die on me. But every dollar I spend on them I make back 100 times (becasue my mac is how I make a living) The important thing is she gets what she really likes. You don't want your girl blaming you for her laptop she doesn't really like while she looks at the one she really wanted in the store window. TRUST ME ON THAT!!!

The Mac is the higher priced of the two, PCs are the best for work and play, most software is designed for PC, yes there is alot for the Mac but nothing close to the powerfull programs you get for PC, if you are worried about security, its the Mac in the winners seat hands down, but if you can be responsible and take the time to keep your PC safe, you will be fine, but for the ease of use and the cost between the two, i have always chose PC over the Mac, i hope this helps you, if your she does go to a PC then she can always try Linux its as safe or safer then Mac, good luck to you both.

It is true. The operating systems work differently, and viruses are almost always written for a PC's operating system. Not enough Mac's out there to make it worth their while, I guess!!! I own a Mac and love it. And I've never gotten a virus.

Being that I work in publishing I think mac is best for what I do. It multi tasks better than any PC, aside from the high price I think that if you are using your computer for business related puposes mac is the best.
Even at home I own a mac, just because I am used to them, although I am still making payments on mine, I still wouldn't trade it for a PC, I just like mac better.

Depends what you're using it for, really. I'm in graphic design and Mac is the industry standard for practically all creative work, visual, music, etc. Plus I can't remember the last time I was concerned about a virus, or defragging for that matter. Also, they just look cool. Mac has to appeal to its design base, so you get extremely well-designed, nice looking machines.

macs are wonderful, arent they. actually i dont have any. but ive used them and they are very well built, and since they are now using intel chips, they are faster, as they can support both operating systems (win/tiger). they may be expensive but i would recomend one over a pc. unless its a umpc

It all depends on what operating system you like. The hardware can be the same on either system.
