I notice that heterosexual men act funny around gay guys. They claim it is not fear. If this is not a 'phobia' then what is their problem?

The term is completely accurate on many levels.

The first being 'fear', like it or not, some straight men fear homosexuals because of silly beliefs, specifically that every gay man sees every straight man as a potential sex partner, that in some way gays rape straight men. A fallacy of course, but if you read some of the comments in this section, some have said it's why gays should not be in the military, because they don't want to be raped in a foxhole.

The second is the 'aversion' factor. Again, through widely exagerated indoctrination, straight men are told anal sex is bad, yet have no compunction of having it with women. The question then is, is it aversion to anal sex or just anal sex with men and if so why? except for the reach around, it's still anal. You'd be surprised by the answers and excuses you get on this one.

Third, the 'feminization' factor. Straight men have a skewed view of gay men as feminized males. This of course is a stereotype (which occasionally fits) but is not realistic. Straight men fear being seen as women. It's that simple, they just hate the idea of being seen as a sex object to other men. The irony here is that being seen as a sex object by women would embolden a man, but from another guy, bang, ego blast and no more puffed up male ego. They can't handle it.

A real man, Straight or Gay, knows who he is and is secure completely within his sexuality, as such he has no fear whatsoever in regards to others perceptions of him. Consider, Brad Pitt, Colin Farrel, and other male celebrities who know they have a gay following. Instead of being disdainful, they show appreciation and accept the compliment and adulation that comes with being recognized, not as a feminized man, but as a man period.

Homophobes don't understand this, and until they realize how silly they actually are, they never will.

Our society works so hard at making homosexuality bad that many men are afraid to get too close to gay men. They are afraid that somehow by being close to or worse friends with a gay man, they will be classified as gay or potentially gay.

The fear is so great that some men associate with men that act the way they do. Since gay men sometimes act differently, these straight men do not know how to act around the gay men.

This becomes more pronounced when these men associate only with macho men. They develop a belief about what a man is and sometimes classify gay men as less than men. This has greatly changed over the last twenty years or so and is getting better all the time.

Take care,
Troy

decrease and pasted out of your definition: it could additionally mean hatred, hostility, or disapproval of gay human beings, sexual habit, or cultures, and is frequently used to insinuate bigotry. this is strictly what you're describing. How is it misguided??? Sound VERY precise to me. for my area, you're actually not a homophobe, on the grounds which you think of that homosexuality is misguided. yet once you go the line, and use insulting words like 'f*g' or 'homo' to describe us, or experience the could desire to insult us, pontificate to us of your ideals, or in any different case handle us like we are actually not even human beings, then homophobia is exactly the fabulous term. I even have a co-worker pal who's evangelical Christian. we've pronounced our positions to one yet another with admire and dignity. this is how the difficulty could be dealt with by way of civilized, non-homophobic adults!

Homophobia is more than just discomfort around gays. Many people are not at ease with people who are different or something they do not appreciate. That's human nature.

Homophobia is an extreme disdain, mistrust of gays. Fear that they have powers to cause you harm and acting on those fears. Often times people who are closet cases use this loathing to mask their own fears about having to admit they're gay.

Its probably overused term, but it denotes rabid dislike of homosexuals. Most heterosexuals are not homophobic, at worse they're just ill at ease.

The word phobia doesn't necessarily mean fear it can also mean an aversion.

So yes homophobia is an accurate term.

all hatred is "rooted" in fear. These types are so hate filled they can no longer feel the fear that renders them the powerless types they actually are. Their hatred is like a drug and they are addicted. Out of control.

They claim it's not fear because this type of male doesn't want to admit they're afraid of anything. They think it denigrates their manhood. They're afraid if they look insides themselves they'll discover they are homosexual as well and it will destroy their concept of themselves.

Anyone who's comfortable with their sexuality would have no problem examining it and accepting people with different sexuality.

And I think the fellow comparing homosexuality to rape down below may have some tendencies himself. People fear rapists because they don't want to get raped! People don't like rapists because they hurt people we love. Comparing secretly desiring homosexual activity and secretly desiring to be raped is ludicrous.
