It all depends on how much arm strength you have and how much weight you can carry. Bowling balls can weigh from 6 lbs. to 18 lbs. 18 lb. balls are illegal for tournament and league play, but there are some people out there that still use them.
When I started out bowling, I used a 10 lb. bowling ball, graduated up to a 16 lb. ball when bowling professionally, then down to 14 lbs. after suffering a rotator cuff injury. It's just your preference for comfort. Hope this helps!

The lightest weight is a 4 or 6 pound ball the heaviest is an 18 or 20 pound one, but the best thing to do is make sure it fits your fingers properly, and if you are the average size woman, then you shouldn't need but a 10 or maybe 12 pound ball.

I started bowling last year and my husband, an avid bowler, picked a 10 lb straight ball for me. I tell you, after 3 games, 10 pounds can get heavy. Once my muscles build up I'm going to get a 12 lb ball.
I think they make 6 lb kids bowling balls as well, but they don't necessarily help an adult's game because they don't get pin action or help knock down more pins.
Talk to the pro-shop person at your bowling alley and they can help you out too.

Bowling ball weight does not have anything to do with affecting your game or adding more power to strike the pins with. I'm 41 years old using 14 lb. reactive resin equipment with medium revolutions and have a 218+ average. My son is 15 years old and using a reactive urethane bowling ball with high revolutions and massive amounts of hook. No book average due to not bowling league, but has scored in the 160's. As an ex PBA member, I've bowled against the likes of Steve Cook, Parker Bohn, Walter Ray Williams, Brian Voss and Norm Duke, but they use 15-16 lb. bowling balls with medium to high rev rates. Walter Ray's delivery looks deceiving, but his medium high rev rate combined with forward roll makes his ball look like it's not really doing much, but that combination really makes the pins scatter, which is evident by his record of wins on tour. You can definitely rev a lighter ball more than a heavier one, but you will not get much in terms of pinfall due to deflection and inability for the light ball to hit.

i would use a heavier ball because the lighter the bal the more deflection you will get if you hit the pocket you are more than likely tol leave many single pin spares suchas the 8 or 9 also the faster you throw the ball the less effecivness you have
