Insects are defined as the entirety of class Insecta, and there are about 925,000 different species--more than half of all animal species. Flies are defined as members of order Diptera, which number about 200,000, and they are a subset of insects. Mosquitoes are members of the family Culicidae, and are also Dipterans, so they are themselves flies. There are about 3500 species of mosquito.
