It depends on what type of work it is. If it's a structured setting where everyone is expected to be in a 8 (or whatever), and he's the only one late every day, then that's an issue. It's not fair to everyone else to allow him to be late without consequence, while requiring others to be on time. His work might be splendid, but he's not reliable. I would have a meeting with him, praise him for his work, but also let him know that he needs to be to work on time. You, the department, the company, relies on him to be there on time.

Of course if you have a flex schedule, then maybe you can adjust his hours to accommodate him more, and he won't be late.

But, you can't let him get away with breaking policy. It shows favoritism and will eventually come back and bite you in the butt.

I use to work for my friend and I always knew when I was taking advantage of the power. If he is your best friend just explain that you have no issues with his work and he is doing great however he needs to be more careful on his time as it puts you in an awkward position. He should fully understand as no other job would deal with being late that much. five or ten minutes is different than an hour. This is especially true if you have others that work for you and see that he gets special treatment. I had a mutual respect for my friend when I started. We discussed that even though we were friends we both needed to respect our business career and responsibility.

As the boss u should just tell him straight out that u love the work he does. But it ain't fair to the other people who come to work on time. Maybe he has a problem waking up early in the morning. Whatever the case is u have to discuss it with him. I'm sure your best friend won't be mad just because you told the guy that he should come to work on time.

Change the hours to accommodate him or start suspending him every time he's late. Everybody is replaceable. And as far as him being your best friend's friend, explain it to your best friend and tell him you hope there won't be any hard feelings if you have to fire the guy. Tell him you've put up with for as long as you can, but it's not right to give him special treatment.

You should as him why he is always late. If he has a good reason than maybe change his hours so they are suitable for him especially if he's doing a good job. If he doesn't have a good reason then warn him that if it doesn't change he could be fired. If things don't change after awhile than fire him. Try not to be harsh with him as he is your friend. If you're harsh to him you could ruin a friendship that may take a while to mend.

Tell him
Hey buddy as much as I think you area great worker and the work you do is top notch... if you can't be here on time.. I am looking for another person to fill your spot..
I told you it was a full time job when I hired you... I expect you to put in a full day .. not part time
I will make other arrangements if you can't be here on time.. consider this OUR first and last discussion on this matter

Tell them to get a phone and some respect. And then tell them that they do a 'splendid job' and work togther in peace and harmony for all humanity.

If you are happy with the work then change his hours! Maybe there is a reason he is always late! Or tell him you may need to fire him if things don't change!
