In college I chickened out and instead got major in Econ and minor in Finance because I thought a History major would get me nowhere. After an MBA, a MS in Econ, and other stuff, I am not sure whether I like what I do today (investment banking) and I would change it all for a chance to research and write about history.

A great friend and another history fan as myself did concentrate in History, MA in Historiography, and PhD in History (ancient ME civilizations) and he is a college professor and member of investigation institute. His salary is not spectacular, but he can fend off fine.

As an actual historian, you would need to get a Master or PhD at least in order to secure positions in the academic world (unless you teach at more elementary levels, where PhDs may not be required). You could also become a writer of non-fiction or even historical fiction too. Another specialization fields are museum curators, librarians, archivologists, etc.

Nevertheless, if you know how to present yourself, a history major can open door to top consulting firms, think-tanks, strategic planing and marketing positions . BUT then you will stop using your history major and get into a business track, which will probably end in doing absolutely nothing related to your college career.

a BA in history will get you nowhere..I made that mistake, and now im doing nothing even related to it. If you want a profession in it though you will need at least a Masters degree in a history related field (historical preservation, museum sciences etc..)

Excuse me I cannot quit laughing, I sure wished I had listen when I asked this same question. In 1977, because there is insurance salesperson, house painter, telemarketer, get the idea? Pick another field. (I would do it all over again but I LOVE HISTORY!
