The Beautiful and Talented Dar Williams is my favorite Song Writer.
But if your asking about sheer singing ability
BRENDA FASSIE OF SOUTH AFRICA
She is one of a kind, amazing, spontaneous, political, breaking the rules of music and society.
She was an open lesbian during parts of the 80's (not to cool in SA)
Nelson Mandela and his ex-wife came to her death bed.
She refused to sing in English during the Apartheid,
and her song "My Black President" about Mandela, also marking her return to singing in English makes me cry every time and I've heard it over a hundred.
She also sings and speaks more languages than any other singer I know, and she writes her own stuff.
Some call her the Madonna of South Africa. I think that is an insult!
And my favorite song of her's "Vulindela" (Come what may) was the theme song of the current South African Presidents campaign.
EVERYONE SHOULD CHECK OUT AFRICA'S MOST FAMOUS SINGER
BRENDA FASSIE!!!
Sadly, she died in 2002.
