Despite the conventional wisdom for starting out on a free service, don't! You will eventually want to move to your own server if your blog gets any traction at all. Moving sites (or blogs) properly so as not to lose their rankings and even database of posts is not an easy task.
Instead, find an inexpensive Web hosting company (starts around $5/month - not much different from free) that has Wordpress 2.0 blog software pre-installed and also pick your own domain name right from the start. This way you will promote your blog's brand from day 1. Most hosting companies throw in a free domain name with a few months of prepaid service.
Check the resource below for references and people's feedback about different hosting services.

Good luck!

I like the google blogger. It is very easy to use. Just start with what you are doing that day, and go from there...or with exciting news that you want to share....then e-mail all of your friends, and tell them to look at your blog!
