Could they not be the same colors we are? Why green?

It's for the same reason that witches are portrayed as old crones with pointy black hats and warts on their noses, and the same reason Dracula has the funky accent and a collar that rivals those funnels they stick on dogs' heads to stop them from chewing on their stitches.

People need a generalised stereotype to relate to and fall back upon when thinking of a certain subject, or they aren't really going to know what you are on about when you talk about them. It's a lot easier for a lot of people to visualise a witch as a haggard old woman than a young lady out meditating in a field and collecting herbs, considering that half of them wouldn't even know what Wicca was.

You'll probably find that a popular author or movie a long time ago has portrayed aliens as green beings with large black eyes, simply to show what an alien might look like. People have then caught onto this over the years, and have found it easy to stick with that kind of thing. And so that has become the 'social norm' of the alien world, I guess.

When an artist portrays an imaginary humanlike being, and wants to make him stand out from the real humans he wants as many differences as he could squeeze in.
Often they're made very large, sometimes much smaller that real humans. The artists often borrow antennas from insects.Strange looking eyes are a must. To contrast, skin color must be completely different. Since a great many of us have skin with a great deal of red in the color, green is the opposite, making the imaginary being stand out from the rest of us.

I think it's stereotype. It is just generalization. In fact people who write and shoot science fiction may think that there several races of aliens. And the race that frequently visits us is hostile to us and they are green because green is not the most pleasant color. May be some friendly races of aliens are pink or lilac

A sterotype invented by writters, movies, comics, artists dealing with Sci-Fi. That would be interesting of Aleins looked just like us and we just found out they had invented space travel before us and that was the only differnce we had with eachother.

It's the different atmosphere. I mean our astronauts turn silver with gold faces when we bounce around on the moon, right? So they might think that's weird.
