it's true and called "SLEEP APNEA"

Sleep apnea or sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. These episodes, called apneas (literally, "without breath"), each last long enough so one or more breaths are missed, and occur repeatedly throughout sleep. There are two distinct forms of sleep apnea: Central and Obstructive. Breathing is interrupted by the lack of effort in Central Sleep Apnea, but from a physical block to airflow despite effort in Obstructive Sleep Apnea. In Mixed Sleep Apnea, both types of events occur. Regardless of type, the individual affected with sleep apnea is rarely (if ever) aware of having difficulty breathing, even upon awakening. Sleep apnea is recognized as a problem by others witnessing the individual during episodes, or is suspected because of its effects on the body (sequelae). The definitive diagnosis of sleep apnea is made by polysomnography.

If you have sleep apnea then indeed you will stop breathing during your sleep. Your sleep will not be in the REM or deep sleep because your brain is calling for oxygen. This condition can lead to stroke or heart problems and a sleep study should be undergone. The usual remedy is a PAP machine which introduces a positive airflow in your nose to keep your throat tissue from closing. Its potentially serious so get it checked out if you wake up gasping or your partner tells you of it. Good luck

People who have sleep apnea stop breathing, but usually wake themselves up by "jerking" awake. People who have sleep apnea usually snore very loudly. Charecteristics of sleep apnea include feeling tired during waking hours, even when you got 8 hours of sleep or more, and falling asleep throughout the day.

Yes, if you have sleep apnea. I would watch my husband sleep and get petrified. He would stop breathing for 10 seconds at a time. Thank God he lost weight and does'nt do that anymore.

only if you have sleep deprevation. if you don't, then no. You may have a dream where you stop breathing and you actually do it while youre sleeping for a few seconds but breathing is just like blinking, we just do it without paying attention.
