There are 2 kinds of oil lights. One tells you its time to change the oil and needs to be reset after the oil change has been done. The other is a warring light. Its tell you if the oil pressure is to hight or low. Some times it comes on if the oil level is to high in the pan. If you why its on you need to take it to a shop ASAP and have them check it out before you have to buy a new motor.

If you have a faulty lubrication system and it's left for any amount of time without fixing you can easily damage the engine beyond repair. It can take only a minute or so for some unlubricated parts to grind together, break or seize.

It could be your oil and/or filter is shot, your oil pressure sensor is not working or something is wrong with the electrical wiring. Finally you might have a damaged, leaking or blocked lubricating system in the engine and a mechanic would have to diagnose and fix it.

it could be a faulty sensor, but that is unlikely. The sensors actually cannot tell if the oil is new/ old/ topped-up, just if there is enough, and equally importantly if it is being maintained at the correct pressure. You may have a problem with your oil pump. Check your parking spot. Do you see oil stains there? It could be a leak. If you are driving a old long-stroke diesel, there could be some back pressure, which could be causing excess oil pressure and hence some leakage.

What is the year and make ? You might have too much oil in it. and that is not good. You may have an oil leak and thats not good either. Get an oil change and have them change the oil drain plug.

Probably the oil sensor sending unit. An oil change place can probably help you. Auto Zone or autozone.com can tell you where it is if you want to do the work yourself. Probably an easy fix.

I wouldn't worry about it too much as if you had no oil pressure the engine would rattle, click, and knock real bad! chances are, that the oil pressure sensor is ether unplugged or defective.
