We moved into our apartment on January 12th of this year. A couple of months later the management company was bought out by a new company. Yesterday I came home to a letter stating that they were not renewing our lease. When I tried to call and find out why, they said they don't have to tell us why. I don't understand how they can just put people out like that for no reason. We cause no problems, pay our rent every month (it's been late once or twice, but they still got it). I asked them if they would place us in another one of their complexes and they said no. So, they obviously aren't asking us to leave because of renovations or anything cause why wouldn't they just tell us that? I am so upset. I don't want to move my son again. Is there anyone I can talk to legal wise about this??

I sympathize with your situation, but unfortunately in most instances landlords are not required to tell you why they do not want to renew a lease. Nor do they need to give you a reason why as to they are asking you to move; so long as they are giving you proper notice and are not prohibited from doing so by law or contract.

In this case it seems that they are giving you proper notice, so they are perfectly within their rights. All I can do is hazard a guess as to the why in your situation: most likely, the new management company has different guidelines than the old company, and you do not fall within those guidelines.

Best of luck in your search for a new rental.

Unfortunately at the end of the lease the landlord is not required to renew the lease and they do not have to give a reason why they will not renew, I believe only NJ with units under the NJ anti-eviction act forces landlords to renew leases

so might as well start looking for a new place, if you stay past the end of the lease the landlord could hold you as a hold over tenant and charge you double rent while they evict you

If you are in NJ they can't do this unless you live in a 3 family or less owner occupied building. Everyone else here is protected by the anti-eviction act and can only be evicted for good cause.

You need to find out the law in your state, and proceed from there.

Unfortunately, once your lease is up, your contract is over and they have no further obligation to do business with you. They don't even have to have a reason. They aren't "putting you out". You contract is over. You can't expect anything beyond a signed contract.
