If it'sa GM, all it means is that the computer says it's time for an oil change. It monitors engine revs, temp, miles, etc. GM has another light that says 'check engine'. That's the one that says there is a problem. Don't confuse these two .

service engine lights mean that there is something wronmg with one of the engine control syestems. in a car older than 96 then it has what is called OBD 1 or on board diagnostics 1 96 and new has OBD2 they are now even comming out with 3 any way if you have a 96 or newer then you can go to like autozone and they will check it for free. some shops do it for free. it can be as simple a a losse gas cap but it will stay on untill you get it shut off with a scanner. obd1 will shut off when it is fixed but that has to be checked at a dealer.

It means exactly what it says. There is no malfunction, it is time to have the scheduled maintenance done on the engine. Depending on the mileage, it may be just an oil and filter change. The more miles the more stuff to service. After the service, reset the light and the next time scheduled maintenance needs to be done it will remind you.

It trips when ever you have a problem with your fuel/air ratio. Usually a smog control device. It will reset after about 3 cold starts if the problem was temporary. If you take it to an auto parts store, They will put a computer on it and tell you why it tripped. They can also reset it. This is free at Auto Zone,
