It was Theodore Geissel, writer of Dr Seuss books. They just had his biography on TV and this was his explanation for why he was childless (actually his wife was infertile but he was too private a guy to say that).

i think dr.seuss, but different versions of that saying have been around for ever, i wouldn't give all the credit to him...
