Fast service and Politeness. A person who shows they care and comes back to the table to check that everything is ok with your meal. You'll know a poor server when you see one. Usually, you don't see them. Don't forget when tipping a server it's not their fault if the meal is cooked wrong. As long as the server does everything in her power to correct any problems.

Be attentive to your customers. Don't just show up to take their orders, give them food, and give them their check. Stop by regularly to see if they need something, check their drinks, and remove unwanted plates.
I had a bad server at a restaurant. She completely ignored our table because some friends of hers sat in her section. She just stood by their table and talked to them. She ignored us even when we called her over for something we needed. The sad part is we were a big party and had to pay the gratuity tip. I wanted it taken off the bill because I felt that she didn't deserve a tip for such poor service but my group didn't want to argue more with the manager.

I have pretty low standards. A bad server brings me my bill when I'm still eating and then has to take it back when I order dessert. Other than that, they're mostly good.

my best dining experiences have been enhanced by a server who was polite, had personality, and paid attention to detail. the best server i ever had came from a little lodge on a lake in crescent oregon. she was humorous, was able to enhance our meal with suggestions, was fast, didnt interrupt us, lit our cigarettes, even suggested an after dinner drink that we would have never thought of. she made our night and we will travel the extra distance in the future, just to dine there, because of her.
the worst experience was a woman who absolutely didnt want to be there...and she told us that when she came to take our order...it just got worse from there...

i love good service. in food service, the best attribute is to be there when needed and not there when your'e not. bad service is the result of laziness. it doesnt take much to make sure that everything is satisfactory. also, i HATE for servers to wait til i get a good mouthful of food to come by and ask if everything is all right. drives me nuts.

A good server is one who brings you your food and doesn't make you walk to the back to get it yourself. And a bad one is one who puts bodily fluid into your food.

and a bad one doesnt care and is just there to be there and expect a tip for doing nothing
