Is the ability to sing well the gift since our born or what we can actually pursue by taking vocal lessons? I do sing in choir, but not solo as I'm kinda hopeless in that.
Would singing lesson helps?

I've been a professional singer since I was 12, travelling the world on contracts (first with my parents, then with my own band) at some of the most prestigious hotels around. I also trained a lot of people to sing/sing better (my other band members, singers from a band we managed, and a group of teenagers who formed their own show-band), with great success. That being said, I can tell you that some people really are born with the gift of singing and a good singing voice. Others get their "raw" voice toned and their tunes improved by lessons and lots of practice. Then of course there are some people who seem to have been born with the "anti-singing" gene, and don't seem able to catch a tune no matter how long they've been trying (There was one such example at a music school I attended when I was a teenager). Unless you fall under the third category, singing lessons will help a lot (if you have a good teacher) for a while. A teacher can only do so much though - you'll have to make it on your own with TONS of practice. One good way is to play a note on the piano, and sing it for as long as you can. Use the same note over and over again (start with a note like the middle C, which is neither high nor too low) for at least a week, before you go on to the next one. Yes, it's VERY boring, and sounds so simple, but you'll notice that you never quite seem to keep the same note in one go - your voice will sound like the ocean - waves all around! This will help train your vocal chords AND your ears, which also play a very important part in your singing.

Singing lessons always help in improving the voice, and having a good singing voice doesn't mean you've had it since birth, it comes from practice. How often you sing can help strengthen the vocal cords and therefore would result in a nice singing voice. =)
