Depending on the amount of Data on your HD will determine the amount of time needed to Defragment it. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. It is recommended to do defragmenting while at School, Work or when sleeping.

After doing the steps to get to the Defragment program you will see it lists the Drives that can be defragmented. For most computers this is the C and D drives. This is usually one HD that is partitioned into two drives. On my computer the D drive is where the preloaded programs are stored and never needs to be defragmented.

Highlight any one of the Drives listed in the Defragment window then select Analyze button. This will examine the drive and tell you if it needs to be defragmented or not. Do this with each drive and do the recommendation.

.
DEFRAGMENT YOUR HARD DRIVE
to bring files together, and free up space on your hard drive for faster operation.

1. Left click START > move your cursor over Programs >
2. In the sub menu that comes up, move your mouse over Accessories > then to System Tools > and then left click on Disk Fragmenter.
3. In the Disk Fragmenter window that comes up > click button DEFRAGMENT
4. If you have less than 15% free space on your hard drive, you will need to delete some unnecessary files BEFORE you can complete the Defragment operation successfully.
I suggest you move some files to other media, like moving some photos, and MyDocuments to a CD; and then delete them from your computer. You can always veiw them from the CD.
You can also go to Add/Remove Programs, and delete any programs you don't use. You can even delete programs you use rarely if you still have the CD for a later time.

If you get to where you really need more Hard drive space, go to Amazon.com, or Ebay and get an additonal (and bigger) Hard drive to install on your PC.

Disk Defragmenter consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk, so that each occupies a single, contiguous space on the volume. As a result, your system can gain access to your files and folders and save new ones more efficiently. By consolidating your files and folders, Disk Defragmenter also consolidates the volume's free space, making it less likely that new files will be fragmented.

To defragment your disk go to Start Menu-->Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->Disk Defragmenter
