In my book, yes, 16 is way to young to drive. I think if they are still in the teen years at all, it is too young to drive. My sister has been driving since she was 17, and in the first two months, she was in 5 car crashes. Her fault, every single one of them. My old co worker had a son who died when he 19 right by my house, because the driver was not to good at it, and was only 16 years old. I think 4 kids died in that one. i am 20, I will be 21 in February, and i still don't drive. I don't feel I am ready for it yet at all, and I am a wife and a mother. I was ready for all of that, just not ready to put everyone Else's lives in danger because of another inexperienced driver on the road. in 1997, a 16 year old kid in a huge truck almost killed my parents, because he could hardly see over the dash board, and ran a red light. My mother had a broken leg and collar bone, and my father's head went through the windshield. They were both wearing seat belts, but he hit them so hard, that the whole front of the car was just a smashed piece of metal. It is getting worse even more now because of all the new distractions that are out there, Ipods, cell phone's, CD player, etc. People just don't watch the road.

I think it's too young. I think they are or have raised the age to 17 in some states and until kids are 18, they need to drive with an adult unless they need to car just for work or school.
Where I live, you cannot get a learners permit until 16 and cannot take a test until you have had a learners permit for 6 months. You also had to have successfully completed an accredited driver education course if under age 18.
All applicants for a driver's license under 18 years of age must show proof of driver training at the time of the driver's test. The applicant can either be trained at home or enroll in a driving school.
Applicants who successfully complete driver education through a commercial driving school or a secondary school must wait 120 days after issuance of the learner’s permit before taking the driver exam.
Applicants who were instructed wholly or in part through a home training program must wait 180 days after issuance of the Learner’s Permit before taking the driving test.
All in all, it comes down being 16.5 years old but I think the minimum age should be 17 to get a licence.

I think it's too young. Personally I think 17 is a better age. Learner's at 15 and license at 17. That gives 2 years of "observance" driving. I just think teenagers need more time learning how to deal with all the other idiots they share the road with. But then again anytime you take yourself out on the road you take your chances anyway...no matter what.
I don't know what has happened to drivers over the past few years but when I started driving 14 years ago people weren't NEARLY as aggresive, rude and in a hurry to get nowhere as they are today.

In order to get a license now you have to get 50 hours of driving experience with an adult before you can get your license. The drivers ed program makes sure the kids are ready to drive before they get their license. So it wouldn't really matter if they were 18 or 16 because the real thing that matters is experience. 16 is a great age for a drivers license.

I am 17 years old & I just got my drivers license. I love driving but I am also very careful.
Yes, some teenagers are dangerous on the roads. But, some people stereotype all teenagers as bad drivers. They say they are 'new'.
I've been driving pretty much since I was 15, I had my permit renewed 2 times. Finally, at 17 I got my liscense.
I agree with you, though. There are alot of BAD teenage drivers out there. Even I have to watch out for them, & I am a teenager myself :-D.
Just tell your daughter that when she starts driving she should call you when she gets to where she is going ... even if it is right down the street.
And, also to call you when she is leaving to come home.
It is a good system.
Hope I helped ...
:-D

Ok, here's what it's like where I live
When U hit 10th grade you take drivers ed in school
Age 16, you may get your permit IF you go to driving school (seperate from the school system). You must have your permit for 1 year. You can only drive w/ some who has had their licence for 3 years
Age 17 - you may bet your permit and driving school is optional. You must have your permit for 6 months. After that time you can get your provisional drivers licence and you can only drive w/ 2 other ppl in the car. (I think they have to be relatives). You must have your provisional drivers licence for 1 year.
Age 18 - you get your offical driver's licence.

I got my learner's permit at 15 and my license at 16. It seems young but you only get experience from learning. People have wrecks when they are inexperienced. If she gets her license when she is 18 or 19, she'll still be inexperienced and the same thing can happen. Just teach your daughter how to be responsible and don't let her have friends in the car with her when she is driving. Friends and music are distractions. I think the younger you start learning, the better you are at it. My younger brother is starting now and he is 10. They live in a rural area so no one is in danger.

Your mom is paranoid. If your daughter is responsible, 16 is fine to drive. Young drivers do have more accidents, but it is often because they don't have much driving experience. Another factor is that if they are irresponsible they may eat, talk on a cell phone or pack the car full of distracting friends while they are driving. Your daughter has to learn to drive sooner or later. Just figure out what's best for her knowing her as you do.

The law should increase the age I do think, and parents should hide their car keys so that teens wont just take off some where with out permission.
I'm 23 years old now with three kids of my own,but I remember one time when I was 14 years of age ,I took my Mom's van to the store to get her some cold medicine b/c she was lying in bed sick w/ the flu and I remember when I got back she had a fit.So watch out Momma, don't let your car keys out of your site.

I think 16 is a good age to get your licence. But It should be limited as no friends in the car. It should be used as a way of transportation not a means to hang out with friends.
