Is there a meaning behind Desmond having a copy of Our Mutual Friend? Is there anything specific about that novel?
Obviously there are a million secret meanings in Lost but have a go anyway!

I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that all the castaways met (albeit briefly) prior to the crash?

try this link, also do a search of lost blogs there are countless know-nothings that will ruminate ad nauseum on their theories of what everything means in this show. I know one specific proven fact about the show, the numbers entered are all number retired by the New York Yankees, as both writers are from NYC.

No I think it's just to show what kind of person he is. He has read all of the Dicken's books and is saving that one until he thinks he will die and death is a part of LOST.

I think that there are so many things to look out for on lost we try to look into in to deeply when anything happens.... i think it is just a book that when he comes close to death he will read... end of ;-)
