Get her a small, portable, recorder (for those interviews, ya know), and a box of sharp pencils, say, a dozen, and a package of small, about 5" X 8-1/2" notebooks. Put all this in a nice, medium size box, and label it "Fail Safe Computer Back-up System" on all sides.
Then wrap it very expensively. Add a card saying something like "for the writer who has everything, here's one more system to help get those sentences out to the public!"
Have fun!

A few ideas...
a nice journal for daily writing, a pen, books about writing, books about journalism, maybe a contact list of people at several magazines that she wants to write for.

Well a journal would be nice but if she is at the level of actually trying to publish you might get her a 2007 copy of the Writer's Market. It is a phone book size guide with addresses on where to send your material for consideration.

The Artists Way (by Julia Cameron) is a fabulous book that helps people realize their full creative potential as writers. It has all kinds of excercises and is great for any kind of writer.
It's very well known among writers and creative types. I know SO many people who swear by it.

Does she have a thesaurus? I find my can provide real inspiration when I'm stuck. Also, nice notebooks, good writing pens and a package of her favorite comfort drink (special teas or coffees) with a beautiful mug might be good. How nice of you to want to help her spark her creativity and success. Good luck!

A nice soft pillow for her bum. No, I'm serious, you sit on these chairs tapping away and it actually goes numb.
A timer. 'Cause she's going to wander over to YA or start playing solitaire at some point and if she sets it it that will keep her on track.
A really nice big coffemug, cafeine will become her best friend.
Sure you think I'm kidding, but, if she starts writing, in a year she'll look at this list and go, yup, right on the money.

If she doesn't already have one, how about a journal? That way she can write every day. They have some really nice ones at most Barnes and Nobles.

Authors A-Z. This book gives detailed info about which publications accept what types of article along with submission info. If your friend is serious she may already have this book, but if she hasn't it will help her a lot. You should be able to get it at any bookshop.
