A property developer is threatening to sue me over an article placed on my blog and my MP has written to him asking him to back down. I have avoided publicising this; publication of legal letters is a breach of confidence and you can be sued for that. However, if I publicise my MP’s intervention (which will require me to disclose some details of the developer’s claim), will I have left myself open to being sued for breach of confidence?

A threat to sue is meaningless on its own, the developers claim is irrelevant anyone can claim anything they want outside of the court it has no weight. If your mp has asked him to back down, again this has no legal meaning either, however the breach of confidence, ( breach of confidential information) which is unlikely since i assume this is over a planning matter, which all representations are public knowledge anyway, so its very unlikely, you should see a solicitor, but be aware if you have money to defend actions carry on, otherwise perhaps writing libelous or potentional defamatory information ( which i am not suggest your are) is always risky. You still have the argument of public domain anyhow and freedom of expression. Best have some sort of disclaimer at the end of each blog.

Dunno. Best get some confidential legal advice, I'd say.

Unlikely that this developer will sue.

How about if some of this was leaked to the local press? Get in quick befor it's an active court proceeding and you may find they'll back you up.

Research the MacDonalds Two for further info.

Telling the truth is not against the law, yet!

This is what writer's get! You are not a proper writer unless somebody threatens you!

If you cannot back up your sources, you might have to retract the information.

Let us see the web page! They have to prove damages.

Usually, and I am currently in a similar dispute, you get the information coming in anonymously from lots of sources. The newspapers will sometimes not touch these.

Interesting dilemma.

Its a very dodgy area, you need to be sure you have not left yourself open wide for litigation through writing and publishing the blog to begin with. Its too comples for anyone on here to give you an answer on, I think, You really need legal advice...face to face..

Are you sure it's a brach of confidence if You are the recipient??
But really, you need proper legal advise, whatever is said here won't be any good to you unless you can be sure it is sound and waterproof, which you can't.
