After all the guests have left on Christmas Eve, My Nanny and I would decorate sugar cookies for Santa. Now I am 22, and we still do it the same way every year. I am moving out of the city this summer, so this will be my last Christmas with the whole family. I do not think that Christmas will be the same without that tradition. We also wake up at 6:30 every year when it is still dark and plug in the Christmas tree when opening our gifts on Christmas day.

Christmas eve evening our entire community gets together for a "community Christmas tree" event. Area churches take turns presenting a program that usually includes the Christmas story, singing carols and wishing everyone you see a Merry Christmas. The school children each get to pick out a gift-toy, book etc.- and everyone leaves with a bag of old fashion candy, an orange and an apple. Later, as a family, great-grandparents down to infants, gather and go to Christmas eve candle light services. These services never cease to move me! Whoever still has enough energy after that usually gathers at my mother's home to play board games, drink cocoa.

The one holiday tradition that stands out in my mind is when we celebrate the Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve; it truly is the one time that we gather as a family. We put more emphasis on the value of family over the value of gifts. It’s a value that’s been passed down throughout the generations, something that more families could use.

On Christmas Eve, my boyfriend and I spend it at his place with his family. We eat supper around 7, soon after the dishes are done, we sit in the living room and there's one "santa Claus" passing one gift at a time. So it takes longer to open. Then Christmas day, we go at my place with my family and my dad is usually the "Santa Claus", but there's usually two people opening gifts at the same time because we receive many presents. Usually by the next day, my friend comes over and we exchange out gifts. Not much of a tradition, but we still do it.

We decorate our home and office with all sorts of nice reminders of Christmas---lights, lanterns, the Nativity Tableau, stars, Santa Claus, christmas stocking, etc. We prepare gifts for ech other at home and at work. We have Kris Kringle---we drop a gift everyday for our Baby (whose identity we don't know until Revelation Day). We have the novena masses starting Dec. 16---usually held at 4am. That is until the 24th of December. Since it's very early in the morning it's a real sacrifice to complete the nine days. Now, the Catholic churches have devised a schedule for working people---they hold the novena masses at 7pm (anticipated mass). We help the streetchildren by giving them gifts. We buy and eat fruitcake. The main event is usually the 24th of December---Christmas Eve, when we have our family dinner, sing videoke and exchange gifts and stories. We also send out Christmas text messages to all our friends, that's why the cellphones are very busy on these days. The messages start coming in the morning and they pour in furiously all day. The telecomunnications network is crowded with text messages!

I have 5 grandchildren and began a new tradition. Instead of ornaments we hang small, inexpensive toys on the tree. The kids love coming over on the weekends to discover what's new and what they will pick when we have our get together (they have gifts too but seem more excited about the little trinkets on the tree)..I keep adding throughout the days before Christmas.

We attend midnight mass, have a réveillon (french tradition, which includes a big meal, fun ).In the morning we get up, open our gifts, have a big breakfast, relax till about 3pm, then we go to one member of my family (we take turns) and spend the rest of the day there. The wknd before New Year we celebrate on my husbands side with a big meal and gift exchange game, board games, cards.

Eat potato pancakes and waffles all around the holiday. And we open all our christmas gifts during Christmas Eve, usually, or as early as 5 AM on Christmas. We can never wait!

I get up early in the morning and go downstairs and open presents. Then my family enjoys each other's company for a few hours and after that, we go to my aunt and uncle's house. All my family meets there and we open a few more gifts from our relatives. We usually stay out there til 10 or 11 at night. We drink alcohol and talk and laugh.
