A short history of the Vietnam War: In the early 60s the North Vietnamese supported a low level insurgency against the South Vietnams government. But it could not gain enough traction to overthrow it. They started deploying regular NVA troops to confront the ARVN. This was having some success, so LBJ deployed American ground troops to oppose them. The NVA and Main Force VC (regular light infantry, not guerrillas) could not stand up against the American firepower, and were forced to retreat into sanctuaries along the Cambodian and Laotian borders. The ARVN was able to confront and defeat the Local VC left. However, LBJ would not let the US military go across the borders and clean out the Communist threat. He was warned that they would eventually attack, but didn’t want to hear it. The hammer fell over the Tet Holiday in 1968. However, things didn’t go according to the Communists plan. The ARVN met them head to head, and defeated every single assault they made across the country except in the old capital city of Hue. The MF-VC were destroyed, the NLF shadow government was wiped out, and the NVA was so badly mulled they could not mount another major offensive for four years. However, Johnson (who had been ignoring the warnings) was caught by surprise; decided he had lost the war, and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. He pulled the US military off the defeated enemy, stopped the bombing, and spent the rest of his administration trying to surrender to Hanoi. The American people were not having any of it, and elected Richard Nixon with the promise he would bring “peace with honor.” He realized that the ARVN was better than everyone had thought, and introduced “Vietamization.” He turned the war over to the ARVN and started pulling American combat troops out. It worked too. By 1972 most of the American troops were gone. The NVA had rebuilt its strength, and tried an over-the-border invasion in the Spring. The ARVN met them head-to-head, and fought them to a standstill. Than the US airpower isolated the battlefield, and the ARVN counterattacked. Over the next several months they systematically wiped out most of the North Vietnamese Army trapped in South Vietnam, and when Nixon won reelection Hanoi was finally forced to sign a cease-fire to save what was left of their forces. The US withdrew the last of its combat troops in 1973 with the promise it would continue to support the ARVN with material and air-support if North Vietnam attacked again. “Peace with honor!” But the American antiwar movement did not want “peace…” with “honor,” or any other way. They wanted a Communist victory. Along with the biased media and the born-again radical Democrats in Congress (who had all been moderate Democrats when they voted for the war in 1964) Richard Nixon was hounded from office on trumped up charges and a hate campaign. Once he was gone the radicals in Congress cut off almost all aid to South Vietnam. In the meantime the USSR rearmed North Vietnam with everything from tanks to fuel. The ARVN’s equipment started breaking down, and they were running out of ammunition. With a guarantee from the radicals in the US, North Vietnam broke the cease-fire in the spring of 1975. Congress would not let Gerald Ford come to their aid. Without resupply the ARVN shot off the last of their ammunition than scattered. YOU CANNOT FIGHT TANKS WITH BAYONETS….!!!! In the end, with the antiwar movement and the liberal media cheering them on, the NVA overran South Vietnam. The radicals had what they wanted, a Communist victory. Than the blood-bath started. Over the next decade almost 5,000,000 Southeast Asians were murdered as the Communists consolidated their victory. Millions more were imprisoned, displaced, and/or forced to flee for their lives. “Boat-people” washed up on every beach in Asia from Japan to Australia with every tide. And the liberal media, antiwar movement, and radical Democratic Congressmen? They ignored what was happening. That’s how the Communists won the Vietnam War.
