"los" does not mean city... and the "san" means "saint" in Spanish.

Los Angeles and San Diego both have names that come from Spanish.

Many Spanish place names in the US were named for different religious figures, such as saints. In Spanish, the word for saint is "San" (or "Santa" for female saints, or "Santo" for male saints who names start with a "To" or "Do"). So San Diego means "Saint Diego" (some translate Diego as James). San Luis Obispo means "Saint Louis the Bishop" and "Santa Clara" means "Saint Claire"

Los Angeles was originally named "El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reyna de Los Angeles de Porciuncula" or "The town of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels of the little portion (of land)" -- in time that name got shortened to simply Los Angeles (The Angels), and when California changed from Mexican rule to American rule, the county around the town officially became the County of Los Angeles, and the city was also so named. but nowadays the name got even shorter to two letters: LA.

I have lived in Phoenix and visited L.A., San Diego, and Las Vegas. For a young, single dude like yourself, I would recommend San Diego. Phoenix is too hot and dry, and there is not much going on there. There is great nightlife in Scottsdale and Tempe, but eventually it gets boring. Phoenix is over-crowded (because everyone has been moving there), has lots of traffic, and lots of crime. It is getting smoggy too. Not as smoggy as L.A., but pretty smoggy. San Diego is an amazing city, on the ocean, plenty of nightlife, and a lot more fun than Phoenix. The only problem with San Diego is that it is so expensive.

'los' doesn't mean 'city' , it....contextually, if not exactly, means 'the'....'san' means 'saint' as in 'saint diego'.....'san' francisco....saint francis, etc. Los Angeles isn't the full name of the city, it's some long *** name...

It means "Saint", but others, like Ron Burgundy, think it has something to do with whales.
