I understand that Oscar Robertson averaged a triple-double for an entire season, but he was a giant playing among dwarfs, and he was not a point guard.
The NBA did not officially keep the triple-double as a stat until Magic Johnson showed up. I'd like to say that John Stockton was the best PG ever, but because Magic Johnson "created" a stat, I have to give it to him. Jordan was not a PG, regardless of what the idiot up above thinks.

Bob Cousey comes to mind, Magic is right up there, John Stockton, Nate Archibald, Steve Nash, Allen Iverson. My pick would be Cousey with Magic a very close second.

Smack whoever said Baron Davis! Now, I like the Magic pick but I gotta go with The Big O. Those tripple dubs must count for something. I've never seen a game with him but that guy sounds like a point God!

Earvin "Magic" Johnson with all those LAKER CHAMPIONSHIP RINGS!
Michael Jordan has more rings, but he was a SHOOTING GUARD. Larry Bird is also a great Champion too, and he was a FORWARD. There is NO BETTER POINT GUARD EVER than 6 foot 9 inch Magic Johnson who could dribble and pass (that's why the Lakers drafted him, not for his scoring), and direct the floor with commanding authority.
The Lakers were blessed as well when they quickly found out Magic could also REBOUND, DEFEND, and SHOOT too!
How about that game in 1980 (his first year in the LEAGUE), which was his first FINALS against the 76ers in PHILADELPHIA while Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was nursing a sore ankle back home in LA.
Magic led the Lakers to victory with 42 points, 15 boards, seven assists and three steals. He even jumped for the opening tap. Johnson became the first rookie ever to win the Finals MVP Award! The stunning effort exemplified his uncanny ability to do whatever the Lakers needed in order to win. Was he the best player of his day? Another all-time great thinks so.
"Magic is head-and-shoulders above everybody else," Larry Bird once observed in the Chicago Sun-Times. "I've never seen [anybody] as good as him."
Johnson's Honors: Elected to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (2002); NBA champion (1980, '82, '85, '87, '88); NBA Finals MVP (1980, '82, '87); NBA MVP (1987, '89, '90); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1983-91); All-NBA Second Team (1982); 12-time All-Star; All-Star MVP (1990, '92); Olympic gold medalist (1992); One of 50 Greatest Players in NBA History (1996).

I would take Magic Johnson (Lakers)as well because he was so good. I pity anyone who has never seen him play. If I have to choose another PG it would be John Stockton (Jazz), who holds the records for most steals in a career, and most Assists in a carrer.

i'm torn between magic, jason kidd, and steve nash becasue they are all true point guards. alot of people think a point guard scores like 20 points a game but thats a shooting guard. i think raymond felton will join that list in a few years

Magic Johnson is hands down in my opinion. John Stockton was phenomenal as well. In modern era I think there is a case to be made for Mark Jackson as well as Kevin Johnson. Those are a couple names that hadn't been mentioned yet.

Gotta be John Stockton, he was quietly efficient and ended up being the all-time leader in assists in steals, qualities a good PG must have. His decent mid-long range on his shots and his ability to get to the hoop made him very deadly. Did I mention that he was a good passer and had this guy named Karl Malone to help him chalk out assists.
