"Drawing a blank" is when someone asks you a question and you can't come up with an answer to save yourself. Thus called drawing a blank!

I don't think anybody really can, its self exclusive like a double negative. Something like being dead, in physical (not spiritual) terms can we really "be" dead?
Anyway its just a manner of speaking, to say that an action is attempted with no effect, or to no avail.
Somewhat close also to making a "bluff" (which is basically encouraging the wrong opinion or simply put lying), OR drawing a "wild-card" (slightly different however in that this usually causes an effect that was previously unknown).

Well aswell a draw a picture, draw also means to pull out, take out or extract something.. so I guess they try and extract some info, but when they do its empty, hence draw a blank

I think it derives from dominoes, when the person picks a double blank from the unused dominoes. The person then has drawn a blank.
