I am a female to male transsexual, and it's kind of interesting to me how many people don't know or don't realize that WE exist on the spectrum too. It seems to me that people have come to put the word "transsexual" and "man to woman" together. NOT all transsexuals are men wanting to be women, and NOT all transsexuals are gay in the beginning. Not all female to male transsexuals are "just lesbians" either. It seems to me, even though transsexuals are still not favored in society, that the male to female transsexuals are taken as "female" more than the femael to male transsexuals are taken as "male".

i think its just that there are more male to female transsexuals that are out. also its harder for a male to female to pass and therefore making them more noticable. i think the female to male transsexuals blend in better to society and are overlooked by the hateful people more then the M2F are.
its public perception thats all. a guy in a skirt is looked down on more than a female in mens clothing is.
also i see more M2F than i do F2M transsexuals so i think the M2F are more prevalent. this is just what i have noticed and by no means how it maybe in other areas.
i myself am a M2F and thats why i see more people like me.
i have met some F2M transsexuals and they were some of the nicest men i've ever met.

It's easier for an MTF's surgery to work out (surgeons have crudely phrased it as "it's easier to dig a hole than build a pole"), and for whatever reason, MTFs have been the public face of transsexualism. I mean, they're the ones on the talk shows, etc. There are several well-known and vocal MTFs, like Kate Bornstein and Joan Roughgarden. (Though an FTM science professor recently came out and shared his experiences as both a woman and a man in science, and how sexism is still pervasive.)
Also, because of sexism, some people assume that a female-born person who wants to become male just wants the societal privileges that come with being male.
That may not account for everybody, and I'm sure it doesn't (sheer hatred and fear of anything different has a role, too), but that's my story and I'm sticking to it. :-)

I know; I understand. It comes, mostly, from exposure, I think, since the numbers I've read show that there are about equal percentages of MtF's and FtM's. You just rarely get to see on TV, in movies, in books, or hears songs about FtM's. It's getting better, but it'll still take a long while for it to come about.
One of the big triumphs, to me, was when in the show Nip/Tuck, they went to a GID clinic and burst in on a support group. The show centered on, of course, an MtF, but for a brief moment, we got to see an FtM talking, saying, if I remember correctly, "What if the guys happen to look over and see that it's a brand new penis?". Awesome, despite being so little- just to let people know that this sort of transition is possible.

being a m2f pre op transsexual
i have done a fare bit of sudy on the male to female transition
with it i have noticed that female to male transitions
are not stidied as much
or seem not to even be mentioned in a lot of studies
i think the possibility of a f2m transsexual of passsing it a lot higher
and without high profile f2m comeing out and broad casting it to the world
i don't think the world will see them
there is a lot more m2f internet sites and with drag queens,
and other high profile m2f transsexuals in the main stream society
the main stream know there are there
but there are a lot of f2m transsexuals out there
just we never hear about them
so we never think about them
transitioning is never easy for any transsexual
we all just want to blend in and be taking as our true self's
it is just sad any of us get the flake for it
good luck

I'm not sure that's true...but you obviously know more about the subject than I do...Maybe the problem lies in the gay communities insistence on the GLBT terminology...I think that most people think that people who choose to change their physical selfs are gay (while some of us know that's not true)..that's the first misconception...and I think that society in general has trouble with a person with a 'manufactured' penis..ie how/can it be done..is it functional..etc,etc,etc,...Basically I think this comes down to a lack of education and information...as a gay man all of my life I still have to remind myself of the fact that not all of you are gay/lesbian and I should know better..but even in gay/lesbian lifestyles there's not a lot of talk or information out there...I don't think most people are stupid--I just think that they don't know.....

You rarely hear of female wanting to be a male. Its like why would you want to punish your self like that when you could just be a lesbian.. You always hear about male wanting to be female so that is more commen in the public as far as knowledge of transsexuals.

MTF's in most cases just look like drag queens, they often still have facial hair and the bone structure of males. FTM's on the other hand are often just mistaken for wimpy looking men.The hormone treatments lower their voices and cause facial hair to grow so the disguise is more convincing.
