Most of the extreme radicals of the 60s later became the Democratic Party as we know it today. It used to be just the other side of the same coin in the days of Truman or FDR. It's different now, which is why there's so much animosity between the parties.
Unfortunately, a vote for the Democrats now is a vote for whoever is in charge; possibly the Clinton woman or the milk toast skirt hanger Kerry, and that may mean a less than ideal outcome to the war; possibly the disasterous outcome of which you speak. I hope not, but I had a sinking feeling when I heard the news of their victory.
Voting parties rather than issues isn't really a prudent choice these days, my friend. It's like putting a loaded revolver into the hands of a four year old.

I was against the invasion of Iraq from the start. I am still against it and want the soldiers home yesterday. We can't win this war and the longer we stay the more soldiers will be killed. Anybody that feels we must stay is a fool. If you are so gung-ho for American troops to stay in Iraq then by golly YOU enlist and go take somebody's place that wants to come home!!! Vietnam vet here...I know what I'm talking about!!!

I think we should pull out as soon as possible. Problems in Iraq have only intensified since U.S. occupation. The people of Iraq do not want us there, so why are we remaining. The Iraqis are happy the Dems won because they said that it may mean that there will be a withdrawal soon.
If the country who we're "helping" doesn't want us there, then why are we forcing our troops to stay there. Soldiers are dying every day and for what? For a democracy that will probably never exist?
The area is already a disaster so leaving wouldn't make it any worse. Most of the bombings and killings are in direct protest to our occupation there so leaving will definitely be a good thing.

Yes, I agree. We started this mess and we can't just pack up and leave. We have to ensure the Iraqis can take care of themselves. But a couple of thoughts:
1. Can those people take care of themselves, can they stay away from this madness of Sunni against Shi'ite? And what about the Kurds? Bush let the genie out here and I fear it will be difficult to get it back in.
2. We have to put our troops in less vulnerable positions. This poses a couple of problems. How do we do that and kill the bad guys? How do we do that and train these Iraqis who seem to be lousy cops and troops?
3. We have to rebuild the infrastructure - schools, hospitals, utilities. But how in the world do we do that when there are large numbers of crazy Iraqis blowing these things up or attacking the workers? When you hear that 10 or 15 or whatever number of Iraqis were victims of a suicide bomb while waiting for day work, you gotta wonder...
I pray your brother gets home safely. He's one of the brave kids out there risking it every day.
And I'm a Democrat and I, too, just wonder how we fix this mess the Republican administration has got us into.

Don't listen to republican rhetoric and sour grapes, Rumsfeld proved who the cut and run guy's were. Most Democrats want to finish the job and get out, that's what the republicans did not want to talk about. Bush said he will now go to the table with the Democrats and listen to their ideas, why did he not listen for the past six years? Because a Republican congress backed him and Cheney and rummy told him what to do. They all have made as much money off this war as they can so now it's time to honor the lives of the lost men and women and have an exit strategy.

Difficult to say what will happen since the Democrats don't have a plan for Iraq, other then "change". Who know what they'll try to do? It would be a disaster for the middle-east if the US just pulled out.

I agree, Germany, Japan, Korea and Bosnia. What's our exit strategy from these regions? Saddam's about to be hung. His sons are dead. Democracy has a foot hold. The rest is mostly up to the Iraqi people. The U.S. should keep some kind of presence their. Otherwise, claim VICTORY and get out. Bring on Iran.Tell your brother, SEMPER PHI & WHOO-RA !!!!

I am a Democrat also. I agree with you. I believe that a hasty withdrawal would defeat our purpose for being there.

I agree. We can not just walk out and leave people to their fate. Our troops are doing the best they can under terrible leadership from Washington. We need to keep them safe, try to help the Iraqui people as much as we can, and phase into some partition of the country that will calm the violence.
