One of my friends was dating this guy who is 20, and she was 15. They've been dating for a year, and since in my church, sex before marriage is forbidden, I didn't say anythin because I thought she was smarter than that. I found out later when she ran away w/ him that they had been have been sex since September and that our minister knew and didn't tell her parents. Her parents didn't even know she was dating the guy! I thought they knew so I didn't tell them anything. Why state the obvious, but the fact that he was messing with her like that was the last straw. What can be done? Is the minister liable? Can he be arrested? I know the 20 year old can, but I don't know whether the minister can. It had happened before with a 16 year old, but until now we found out that he had known about that too and now I don't know what to think. Aren't ministers supposed to help instead of hurt? I know he was wrong in covering for her but this is too much!

There is a name for 20 year olds who "date" 15 year olds. They are called child molesters. The sad fact is that depending on the state you live in, that may not be a crime. That fact would answer the next part of your question. If the act is not illegal (as opposed to immoral) then the minister is not bound to report the situation to authorities. Communications between a minister and member are confidential and legally protected EXCEPT where there is imminent danger to a person, especially a child. A situation of child molesttaion or sexual abuse would qualify for the breaking of confidence. Your friend's parents need to contact the authorities.

Who told you that the minister knew? Why didn't you tell if you care about your friend so much? Maybe the same reasons the minister had for not telling is the same reason why you didn't tell. Ministers are not perfect! You had a better chance to tell her parents because you knew first. This is too much for someone your age to keep to herself. You should find an adult that you can trust and stop covering your friend's wrongs. Can't you talk to your own parents? Think about it. Make a promise to yourself not to let your friends dump junk on you! You seem to be the only one hurting over the situation and that is just wrong. The minister, the girl, and especially the 20 year old guy just seem to be going on about their business.

Now im not an attny but it would seem to me that the 20yr old should be arrested and charged with statutory rape, and the minister who seems to have condoned it, should be brought in for aiding and abetting. At the very least he should be removed from the church. Some preacher he is..

I'd drag his butt through the front page of the news paper, get it on tv, and really blow the lid off this thing.

I understand with what your saying but its to try to help a person because you can end up hurting them to. Like yea you would think that a minister would tell the parents but you have to guve the girl time. Maybe she need someone to talk or to lean on before she get to caught up in this guy she's dating or messing around with.

If anyone knowingly keeps facts of a crime unreported, they are in the wrong too. Unless this was something that was confessed to the minister in private,(like confession) then it should be brought out. The minister was wrong for not speaking up. And I would talk to him about it and my parents also.

For all the people who think Age is a big thing, let me tell you it isn't I'm 20 and proudly dating a 15 year old that i love. Wenot having sex and we are keeping it safe but people should not resort to names like Pedo. those people who call me pedo and a loser are the one that will never find love themselves. Putting a love age is wrong and shouldn't be done. some girls act mature for there age and if you aren't having sex with them intil they are 18 then Go FOR IT.

This is called statutory rap and he should be arrested. She should get the beating of her life and then her parents should explain why they did it. Just because a person goes to church doesn't mean God is in their heart, so they may look like a good person on the inside and a fraud on the outside. She was leading a double life and she will be judged by God.

Your friends parents need to know. I am sure the minister let her know right and wrong. How do you know what the minister really knows? Rumor? Assumption?

cara is wrong, ministers are not bound to confessions. but they may have brought him into their confidence and he might have thought that he could do more harm than good by informing the parents. but that is irrelevant.
you know now so let the parents know. this girl is going to end up in a world of heart ache if she keeps this up.
