This has puzzled me for some time. I'm aware of Irish-American, Italian-American, African-American, Polish-American (probably) but no English-American. Why not? Is it really because of the War of Independence - then why are some called Scottish-American. The war was against the British not the English. No?

There are not that many here anymore in America, except for in the old Eastern Seaboard, and the South which never really got that much immigration; they consider themselves to be just Americans. At first the majority of Americans came from the British Isle, but then they were overshadowed by all the other groups. In fact, the most common nationality in America is German, followed by Irish and Italians. People have English roots, but they are mixed with other things as well that are more recent with regard to immigration, causing them to celebrate maybe being Italian more than English because grandfather and grandmother so-and-so are from the "Old Country" and they bring the culture more alive.
I personally don't think the American Revolution is to blame, it's just that the English mixed in with other groups and simply assimilated.
