For a used (gently), or a refurbished laptop, that is exactly what they are going for in the resale biz.

The things to look for when buying a used laptop:

1) Does it have any noises (i.e. whining fan, clicking hard drive) ? Those could be indicators of potential failure.

2) Battery - does it hold a charge? Dell batteries should be tested outside of the laptop - release it from the modular bay along the inside panel there is a strip of LED lights on the battery, *To check battery charge, press the button and the number of lights that appear will tell you charge status. If all lights appear, you have a fully charged battery. Each light that appears accounts for approximately 20% charge.
**Also, check the battery health, press and hold the status button on the battery charge gauge for at least 5 seconds. If no lights appear, the battery is in good condition with approximately more than 80 percent of its original charge capacity remains. Each light represents incremental degradation.

3) Genuine Software, or restore disks.

4) Check that the modular optical drive can read and/or write media (CD's, DVD's).

5) Memory - how much is included? The laws of "supply and demand" rule the market place. Currently, DDR or DDR2 ram is in demand, thus making it less expensive. the model of her notebook use PC-100/PC-133 SODIMMS. One would think "its older... it should be cheaper" This type of ram is out of production, making it harder to find, thus more expensive then DDR/DDR2 SODIMMS.

All of these things are expensive to replace.

Dell has a homepage. You can go there and compare prices of the type of model of computer that you are looking for. Remember one thing most of the time if people sell computers for that price they have had problems. Best Buy and even dell have computers that will probably meet your daughters needs. The prices for these are $299 and you do not have to worry about buying someone else's problems. Computers are so affordable now I would not buy this computer. Probably has some serious viruses that they cannot get rid of.

For $250 I guess its worth it. Dont plan on playing any games. Also im not sure if it will play dvds. I couldnt find your model on a google search so I dont know how much ram or hard drive space it has. Really you cant expect much for that cheap. Also windows 2000 sucks.

If its been gently used it actually is probably not a bad deal but there I saw several on eBay for similarly priced models. The difference in the prices seem to be based on the amount of memory. On eBay I saw them from 200-300.
