Peronally, I think Allen should concede. I don't think I've ever seen a recount in which the initial vote was overturned. Maybe Florida (2000), but I don't think anyone came right out and said Gore won the state. They were saying it's "too close to call" on election night 2000.
From what I've seen, recounts cost a lot of money, and diminish people's confidence in the political process. For those reasons, I don't like them.
At the same time, I can understand why somebody who supports Allen would want a recount. With an election so close, you want to be extra positive that every vote was counted and the winner actually won.

If he is within a half percent of the opposition, he has a responsibility to his party and his voters to have a recount. That's what they are for. As far as the dems hanging themselves, I prefer that both parties work together, for the people. We can do that now that parity has been restored to government. Bush still has veto power, and the dems don't have 2/3 of the seats, so nothing will be accomplished by the dems only...any mistakes made will be shared equally among the membersw of congress. Now maybe we can get some things done, the way our fore fathers intended...with checks and balances. Don't worry rand!

He may be within his right to ask for this but it seems like the Republicans would gain some style points if he graciously concedes. However, it sounds like they are doing some sort of recount already and aren't finding any irregularities (surprise).

He should concede, jusrt because a recount will narrow the gap, but not overturn the decision

George Allen has lost, he needs to give up, and quit throwing a tatrum.
A recount may only change a few hundred votes, it won't change the outcome.
