In light of Turkeys continual refusal to admit the genocide of up to 1 million Armenians before and during WW1, and the recent discovery of mass graves of Assyrians from the equally unacknowledged Assyrian genocide of 1914-15, should a country like Turkey be admitted to the European Union? Not to mention Turkeys continual persecution of Kurds, Assyrians, Armenians and Georgians in the east of Turkey, and its illegal occupation of North Cyprus?

No it definitely should not. The genocide was ignored and been denied for almost a century...but it definitely happened. Seems it is only the Armenians that remember it.

Turkey is fine if you want to go for a cheap holiday.
Turkey is fine if you want to send oil from the east to the west.
Turkey is fine if you want to buy cheap property.
Turkey is a great country and unless you have lived there then what do you know?
The Turkish people are a proud nation and very friendly to visitors.
All nations have a history and some much wrose than Turkey.
You seem to forget Ireland and the troubles to quickly.
Is it so unbeleivable that a country like Turkey might be an asset to the EU.
Take a look at the members of this great state and ask if any have a history they would like to hide.
Give the Turks a chance to prove they can stand shoulder to shoulder with any EU country.
STOP throwing sticks and put out a hand of friendship to a great nation who have many things to share with the rest of the world.

Bearing in mind the following:
- Turkey has opened up its national archives from that era, which includes plenty of documentation on the massacres to anyone who wishes to access them.
- The prosecutions of those who call the massacres genocide are NOT government policy, but the work of right wing groups.
Turkey is showing remarkable openness in opening its archives (something the Brits have not fully done re. massacres in the colonial era) and is not denying the acts, but rather the terminology.
Such wrangling over words is pathetic on behalf of those in the EU who are anti- Turkey's accession to the union, and seems like an attempt to shame the nation. Equally, it would seem easier for Turkey to accept it for what it was, and move on.
I believe it is important that Turkey be welcomed into the EU, so that the EU is not seen as an exclusive christian club; and as an example of a secular democracy in the arab world, it needs to be helped as much as possible.
(The Cyprus question I am not qualified to discuss, but there are always two sides to every story. Likewise persecution in the east of Turkey - I know nothing about this and so am not qualified to pass judgement!)

I am not Turkish, but do you honestly believe that 1 million Armenians died in the early part of the last century? What was the population of Turks and Armenians 100 years ago? Thanks to the colonial powers at the time Britain and France, they encouraged the Armenians to start a bloddy war with the Turks and many died from both sides. I believe that history has been altered to show that the Turks are oppressors, which is not the case. As for what you call the illegal ocupation of Cyprus, can I remind you that Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974, after the Greek Military Junta staged a coup on the Island and the Turkish minority were in grave danger.

It's the O word my Friend!
OIL that is. As we speak an oil pipe is being build in around the capsian sea and will end up in Turkey and this is probably why they are being admitted into the EU.
Did you also know that Iran and Iraq can only get their water supply from Turkey? Could this be another reason?

Turkey should NOT be admitted in the E.U. unless it accepts the Genocides of the Armenians, Assyrians, and Greeks. Someone stated that other European countries should not be admitted to the E.U. for committing Genocide, but the difference is countries like France ACCEPTED such genocides while Turkey STILL denies it. Turkey needs to accept the Genocide if it truly wants to be a part of the E.U. The Genocide happened, I'm living proof (you are too :) ).

Armenian people are poor and even hungry in their country but you still argue with your tales. Come and see, search and learn my friend; Armenians WERE/ARE and SHALL all have better lives in Turkey according to their own country.
But if anyone any nation any kind any specy would tend to seperate, make terror in Turkey hundreds of EU hundreds of countries cannot pass my friend.
Any schismatic cannot live in Turkey. Take it easy my friend Turkish will never tired of fihgting with terrorists, schismatics, politic liars, tale tellers, history brokers... Turks cannot make diplomatic cheats. Yes there was Armenian emigration forced by Ottomans, yes there was FIGHT my friend. Yes there were real loses from both sides. So please do not try to occur new argues, new fights. Our Armenian brothers and poor(vs of rich) visitors and illegal runaway Armenian workers try to have good lives in Turkey. Do not make new enemies to you.

I fail to see how a middle eastern country can even be considered as suitable to join the EU. They are a muslim middle east nation and as such should not be considered. One only has to look at the countrys' Human Rights record as a reason for denial of entry, appalling inhuman treatment by the authorities of people in prisons and at the hands of the authorities, that alone is enough to not consider.

You can't keep a country out of an organisation because of something that happened nearly a century ago. If that were the case France wouldn't be in because of their treatment of the Vietnamese and the Algerians, and we, the British, would definitely not be in Europe because of our treatment of many of the indigenous people of the former countries of the Empire.
Hang on..denied entry of the EU because of our history... sounds like a good idea...Get us out of Europe now..we were bad, we were worse than the Turks, Get us out!!!

Turkey should not be admited to the EU because it refuses to act like a normal country. They occupy Cyprus, deny their past have a joke of a democracy. Until the improve in all these areas no EU for them. To the guy that says that there are 2 stories for Cyprus yes there are.... one of a 70 million strong country with 800k soldiers and that of a small defenseless island of total population of 700k.
