I felt like you did and I am not saying you are wrong. You feel they are picking on you at a critical time in your life. And it isn't fair. They kind of gang up on you when they feel you won't fight back.
But what I have found after coming out of where you are now is...people are genuinly compassionate and just don't know what to tell you when a loved one dies, or you go through a horrendous divorce or you have gone bankrupt or you have a dread illness.
It is human weaknesses that makes them shrink back or lash out.
You need to rise above the fray. For your own sake be peacable with all of them because everything equals out again and they may find themselves where you are with you looking on.
Experience is the best teacher.....but a helping hand when someone is in crisis will be remembered forever.
Love one another for we are all brothers....If I knew you I would help you. We all need friends....and a safe place to fall when we are weak.
Best wishes my friend.

Two reasons come to mind... The positive and the negative.
The negative reason is to put them in a negative state of mind and thus weaken them further that they may be more easily eliminated as competition (it is a logical strategy to eliminate the weakest opponents first).
The positive reason is to make them more aware of their own faults so that they are in a better position to correct them and strengthen themselves.
I'd know... because I do it for both reasons on a frequent basis. Some people I want to see stronger, so I point out what they need to work on. Some people just get in my way, so I do them down to get them OUT of my way.
There is nothing inherantly wrong with picking on the weak. People may consider it dishonourable... but it is the natural way: The weak fall first and are eliminated so that the strength of the rest can prosper.
