I assume that this is under English law. If you are served with a notice to show cause it is offering you the opportunity to come to court and give an account of yourself, in order to persuade the judge that the application of the other party should not be put into effect. Example: in a patent infringement case the notice would be giving him the opportunity to appear at the hearing of the application to show cause why the infringing copies or articles should not be forfeited.

The words "show cause" are always followed by other words which explain just what the application about. Basically you have the choice between coming to court to fight your corner or doing nothing, in which case the application made against you will succeed.

A show cause notice is a notice to appear in court and "show cause" (which means give them a good reason) as to why they should not press charges against them.

an example would be if a divorced parent disobeys the court order for parenting time. The court will show cause the parent to have them explain why the order was violated and if they dont have a good enough reason they court will place them in contepmt of court.

a show cause is because you didnt show up to a court hearing and now you need to explain yourself before the judge....and then they normally follow the show cause hearing with the court hearing that was missed...
