The 06-07s are complete redesigns, beating Toyotas in all categories. Do look at the Saturn Aura before you buy, it turns heads like nothing else, has unparalled customer satisfaction, unmatched reliability, top quality, German design, and grotesquely underpriced. The Impala is #2 for large sedan, fighting well with the Chrysler 300C. Last year Toyota had the most recalls, but the media "failed" to notice since millions would stand against them because of thier reputation. These days reputation is nothing, technology advances so fast it cant keep up. For ex: three years ago GM was one of the worst companies, now they have the most top-rated vehicles, and the quality/reliability surpasses Toyota. Honda is still on top of the reliability ratings. Ford also had more recalls than GM and DaimlerChrysler combined, for reasons like exploding engines and wheels falling off. Here is a quote from the Washington Posts review of the Toyota CAmry "one of which is the Chevrolet Malibu, which in my real-world driving experience has been every bit as good and reliable as the much-ballyhooed Camry but has been maligned primarily because it is a Chevrolet". Oddly enough that was an '04 Malibu VS the totally redisigned '07 Camry. Common problems with Toyotas are plastic rattling until it falls off. People then complain that when they take it to the dealer to be fixed they just say "The cars are made with so much plastic its practically impossible to fix" GM is also the worlds fastest growing manufacturer, and Impala sales are growing faster than Camry or Accord. Hope this helps:)

PS. About the police cars, there switching to the Dodge Charger because the Crown Vic is a heavy, unmanueverable, slow, gas hog.

You didn't mention what sub-model of Impala you are looking at; LS, LT, LTZ, or the SS? Fuel economy would depend on the engine option as the same engines were available in the first year of the ninth generation (2006) as the 2007! Depending on the sub-model there are 4 different engine package options, Naturally the SS is equipped with the (LS-4), 5.3L V-8 with AFM (active fuel management) which deactivates additional cylinders at higher speeds when the calculated load value is low (premium fuel is recommended with this engine)! The other engine available are the 3.9L and 3.5L and a Flex Fuel version of the 3.5L! I would say you are going to get the best mileage with the 3.5L engine!

These newest ones - along with the sister car Monte Carlo - look excellent and drive 10x better than the previous generation.

The fact that you can get 303HP in a front wheel drive is amazing.

The magazines ragged on the 303HP V-8 because of the torque steer - when they turned the traction control off!!! (ha ha what a bunch of idiots!!) What do they expect in a powerful front wheel drive car? Maybe for people in climates with long winters, they want a performance car that won't get stuck on level ground (RWD) on a snowy day when they need to get to work. Maybe they want a powerful car that will sprint up the freeway ramp and don't intend of deactivating the traction control, trying holeshot launch one after another, and then bitching because the vehicle isn't as much fun to abuse as a RWD model.. I lost a lot of respect for C&D over this.

I'd get the V8

Well, I know that the Sheriff's dept. where I live gives Impalas to the deputies who don't do well in driving school (mostly the chicks); the ones that drive well get Crown Vic Interceptors. The ones in Impalas seem to be in a bad mood from having to drive those pieces of crap, so I'd say they aren't a good bargain at any price. Now the 1965 Impala...that's a car!

From looking at the stickers, looks like a good value. We have an 04 Impala LS, with the 3800 V-6. What a nice car! Drive it back and forth from MN to FL. 31 mpg hwy. Plenty of power and a solid, safe car. I would think the new style would have saved some of the good points. They sure are selling alot of them.

I had a 2000 Impala for a while and I loved it! It was very nice. It was the fist year of a new body style so there were still a few kinks in it.

Well made car, gets excellent gas mileage for the size, very comfortable on long trips. It is not a head turner or a snob car like a bmw or lexus but will definitely give you good service and very few problems.
