Go to Start>Run and type in "msconfig" and hit enter. This will bring up the system configuration utility. Click on the start up tab and you will see a listing of programs that start each time you load windows. You can look at the command line entries to see what program is related to the start up file. You can disable start up items here by unchecking them. Do not disable your antivirus or firewall software.

Theres a couple of programs you can instsall that'll give you more information about whats running on your pc....one really good one is security task manager, its task manager on steroids; not only will it tell you the normal stuff like whats runnig but it'll also give you extra info about whether it is a system file or user file as how many resources it's using and the path of the program as well as any additional info it can get from the program itself.
there are others start here: http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-2001&qt=security%20task%20manager&tag=srch

Something silly-when you are in task manager, click on the "Processes" tab, and you will see a list of what is running (minus some spyware). If you are unsure of a process, just google it.
