i also have bloods taken at my 1st appointment to check blood count and iron etc but why are so many women having to wait for a blood test to say they are pregnant surely most can take a hpt and if its + they are and again yes some women need it checked if they have had problems in the past.
if its still negative after some time then i agree a blood test is needed but im unsure why so many need a blood test instead of a hpt ....

I agree....I personally have given advice on taking a blood test for one single reason: People don't believe the results they get on a home pregnancy test. So they ask questions like: my test was negative could i still be pg? OMG, if you are gonna spend the money believe in the results...sure sometimes a test can be wrong but 98% of the time they are telling the truth!! People just don't wanna believe what they read so, they have to get a blood test to reassure if it's true or not.

A blood test is more sensitive to the beta HcG hormone (the main pregnancy hormone). Also, the blood test can give a quantitative (exact amount) count. The level of HcG raises throughout pregnancy and tells the doctor if the pregnancy is normal and estimates how far along the woman is. Running a quant beta HcG also lets the doctor know if the woman is at risk or is miscarrying. I guess the major difference is, that in America pregnancy is an affliction. Something that can be neatly planned and regulated. Woman have ton of prenatal care with checkups increasing to weekly appointments in the last month. I hope that helps.

Additional comments: I think most women feel more reassured when a doctor says "You are pregnant." Then relying on their own intuition. Just my two cents.

Sometimes if a womans hormone levels are too low to detect on a hpt, a blood test is needed. Unfortunately, after waiting a while and still getting a negative hpt, the reason is because the pregnancy is not viable.

It depends. Maybe they feel more assured if they get the test done in the doctors or maybe the doctor wants to check their iron levels or maybe they have irregular periods and their hormone levels need to be checked more carefully to see if they are pregnant. Six kids, good for you.

Blood tests are usually more accurate, if you are unsure if you are pregnant after the results of teh stick test
