When I have lights on a dimmer switch, it seems that when the adjustment is not a full power, a humming noise comes from either the lights or the switch itself. Is there a way to eliminate this? Or is just simply a low quality dimmer switch?

Thanks for the help!

Well they all hum to a certain extent, some more noticeably than others, You could try a higher quality dimmer and it should take care of the noise. I;d recommend a leviton dimmer they make good quality stuff.

Dimmer switches use one of two ways to reduce the voltage sent to the bulb. Both methods cause a humming noise.

Cheaper dimmer devices make more noise.

1) AC rheostat, basically a variable wire transformer.

2) Solid state switching transformer, fast switching diodes are used to reduce the voltage sent to the bulb

Had the same problem with one of my cieling fans. It wasn't the switch at all. Someone at Lowes told me to replace the bulbs with "heavy duty" ones made specifically for cieling fans. I did. The humming STOPPED :)

Better quality switches won't do that, but check to make sure it's grounded properly.

They hum because they don't know the words.
