you have several options
1) become a geek in a specific field. ppl should say,
"even if u ve any complex doubts, you can always approach Reyes the XX pro." XX ={c, c++, perl, php, java, j2ee, anything in which u ve interest and is currently working with}. It will look great on your resume too.
to become an expert in one particular field
get certifications (eg sun java cert)
hang out with geeks of similar interest
read technical book && online tutorials
subscribe to tech magazines
take classes (its worth the cost)
create your own website
2)go on to be technical manager . you need to groom yourself manegerial skills. seriously you cant be a manager overnight. and your team members will really hate you if you do not know the tactics of handling them.
