Hi all, my friend found a dead bird in her toilet. She had been away for the weekend (the house was empty) and came home to find a dead bird in the toilet. We believe that there was no way that the bird could have flown in and then into the toilet....we think the lid was down also. Is there any way that the bird could have come up from the plumbing??? Please give specifics if you know and how we could prevent this from happening again. It was quite a shock!
Thanks!

There are no animals in the house and no-one else had access to the house. I am hoping there is someone out there with plumbing knowledge that can tell me if it is possible for the bird to have flown in and up from the vent pipe. But thanks to all who answer...:)

And it was a sparrow, if that makes any difference....?

Thanks for all your responses...my handyman said not to screen the vent pipe cause it could get blocked with leaves or snow and cause the gases to back up (bad scene). Would it be physically possible for a bird to come into the toilet through the vent pipe?

It is possible that the bird came down the vent pipe.....I wouldn't say it is a one in a billion chance of happening again tho......I have seen snakes and squirells go down vent pipes but never a bird.....the best thing you could do is purchase a screen or mesh type material and cover your vents with it.....this will prevent varmints from entering your vents while still allowing the necessary air in....

The toilet in all probability has a vent pipe, the bird could have somehow got down through it. It could end up in the toilet then even if the lid was down. I wouldn't ever worry about it happening again if that were the case. one chance in a billion !

The bird had to have either fallen in or was placed there by human or animal. There is no Way it could have come through the vent or drain pipes. It would still have to go through the toilet water trap that always has water in it.

I came home once and found a dead bird in my kitchen on the floor, that I think was living in the attic and found a hole and came through, slammed in something and died. But if it was in the toliet i would guess it came from the vent pipe on the roof. It'll probably never happen again but put a small screen cover over the pipe just in case.

I found a dead bird in our basement toilet. I always leave the lid down. I don't know how it got there.
We have a breathing pipe outside for the washroom downstairs, the bird could have got in. We are just
guessing.

I dont think so, there is only two ways this could have happened
1. the bird flew into the house at some point and landed in the toilet got wet and couldnt get out then died.
2. someone planted it there as a joke or revenge.

Most propably, one of your friend's neighbour's pet bird had died and they dumped it into the toiliet and flushed the poor fella. Its body might get stuck in the pipes and after some other flushes, the bird might drop to your friend's pipe and come out from the toilet...

if she has a cat chances are the cat wanted to share his catch , the bird could of flown in to a wall/ceiling above the toilet then crash landed in the shitter

eeew. i don't know. maybe the lid was up and the bird knocked it down when he flew in there. my husband went to his aunt's cabin once, and found a dead squirrel in the toilet with the lid down. a shock, yes.

that just doesn't sound right. the bird must have flown in before you left and when it tried to get water, fell in and drowned because of the bowl shape.
