In a relatively stress-free environment, gerbils have the capacity to live to be about six and they aren't necessarily pretty. They can go bald and do develop tumors (most animals do--odd but true). However, a gerbil that lives in the typical household with kids about, a little "alone time" (when the kids lose interest) and a few tank mates, a gerbil will usually live for about 2-3 years. Compared to other rodents though, 2-3 years is about normal. If you're looking for a rodent that lives for a while, a rat would be recommended.

Gerbils, like hamsters and rats, may live for only 2 or 3 years at the most.

Gerbils live for slightly longer than say hamsters and as an average can live 3-4 years. However, gerbils are very prone to tumours, many benign, but they can sometimes cause difficulties and therefore can reduce the life expectancy of said gerbie.

Have to say slightly confused to find this question in reptiles...

Mine was 5...a very grand age...and the last year was with only 3 legs (an infection so had to be amputated). He used to sit on my shoulder and watch TV with me when I came back from school.
